THE I n t e r p o s t a l  S e a l s OF EGYPT:1864-1892

Type VII  Interpostal Seals 1879-80

Type VII seals are fairly rare and highly sought after by interpostal seal collectors, this type differs slightly from the more common types VIII and VIII-a, which were issued in great quantities in later years, in that the town names are not inscribed in Arabic letters on each seal. Instead, the word ‘Masrieh’ is inscribed in the center in Arabic letters below ‘POST KHEDIVIE’ in Arabic. ‘Masrieh’ is the Arabic word for ‘Egyptian’. Therefore these seals are inscribed in Arabic “Khedival Egyptian Post” Pronounced “..Bosta Khediwya Masrieh”. However, in French (Above center), the Inscription is “Poste Egyptiennes”, or Egyptian Post without any mention of the Khedival authority!!

Type VII seals were later supplemented by type Vii-a seals Issued for a small number of mainly Sudanese and foreign offices. Both tpyes Vii and Vii-a exist in two die formats; die ‘A’ and die ‘B’.

Kehr describes the type VII Interpostal Seals as follows:

“..crosshatched lines in top of outer circular panel. Below, in a white panel, is the name of the town. In centre, in three lines is the Arabic, "Bustah Khadywiet Masrieh", in coloured letters against a background of fine vertical lines. Printed in vermilion on white. (Shades.)

There are two dies of this type:‑

DIE A.

0 of POSTES is round; dots of    Arabic inscription are square.

DIE B.

The 0 of POSTES is rectangular and thicker with a verticalslit as a centre; the dots in the Arabic inscriptions are rounded.

Size: 39 to 39-1/2 mm.

In the 1984 Issue of the Kehr Catalogue of Interpostal Seals the publisher, Peter Cockrill added the following note about Dies A and B:

“..(Some specialists are of the opinon that these two dies should be separated as two distinct different printings. P.C. )”
